Wine with a Purpose
I love a beautifully balanced wine, and the 2014 Purple Thread is one of my favorites. This wine is a blend of Petite SIrah, Petit Verdot, and Primitivo, three beautiful wines on their own, but Mike (our winemaker) has married these three together in a way that is…magical.
With each bottle purchase of the Purple Thread a donation is made to the Clarksburg Library, keeping literacy alive in our rural communities!

Not only is the Purple Thread an amazing wine, but the story behind the label is pretty amazing too! The Heringer Family has been farming in the Clarksburg region for 150 years and 7 generations. During that time they have always shown a great dedication to their community. The Purple Thread is named after a community thrift store that supported the Clarksburg Library. In true tradition to the name the Heringer Estates Purple Thread wine also makes a donation to the library with each bottle purchase. How incredible is that? I’m an avid book reader, also a collector of cookbooks, so this has always touched my heart.
Time for Steak!
When thinking about what I should pair with this wine, the first thing that came to mind was a beautiful steak. As the end of summer is quickly approaching, I wanted something that would work well in a few situations; sandwiches for family BBQ’s, a great marinade, multiple meat choices, and versatile recipe. That made me think of Steak Sandwiches with a Blue Cheese Sauce. This marinade works well on any steak, but as our store had skirt steak this day, we were in for a treat.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Marination Time: 4 hours
⅓ cup Worcestershire sauce
⅓ cup Olive oil
1 tbsp hot sauce (your choice!)
5 cloves of garlic
3 lbs of meat (skirt steak, tri tip, flank steak)
Salt and pepper to preference
3-4 oz.crumbled blue cheese
1 cup sour cream
Lemon zest of 1 lemon
Pepper to preference
Time to Marinade and Sauce
In a large plastic bag combine marinade ingredients. Add the meat once the marinade is well mixed. Make time for your steak and the marinade to hang out for a while, you won’t regret it. Marinate in the refrigerator for 4 hours. A longer marination time helps keep the moisture in the meat, helps tenderize, and carries those wonderful flavors into your food.
While the meat is marinating start your sauce. Mix together all sauce ingredients. Add horseradish, hot sauce, or lemon juice to taste for extra flavor if desired. Refrigerate until plating.
Making the Sandwich
Remove meat from marinade, salt and pepper to preference, and place on a hot grill. Your choice of meat will determine your cooking time. A general rule is 140 degrees for medium rare. Remove the meat and let rest for 10 minutes.
Slice the steak and place meat in rolls. Top with sauce.
