When you grow over 20 grape varieties, you can start seeing differences pretty early in the growing season! These grapes are already showing their unique characteristics in their cluster shape, size, and growth stage. Every variety gets unique and meticulous treatment at Heringer Estates to make the very best wine come harvest.
The Norton grape and wine are equally wild! The clusters are small, palm-sized, and won’t get much bigger as the season progresses. The berries will swell and turn a dark inky purple, that will translate into a tart, medium-bodied, red wine. This variety is one of the only wine grapes that is native to the the American continent. Our red, white, and blue bottle celebrates this festive and fun variety. The 2014 vintage will be released on June 14th on flag day!
Our Grenache is well known with our winery clients (did you know that we are also a vineyard company?!) for both red and rosé programs. These clusters will be thinned to only leave behind the little wings you see on the side. The main cluster will be swept away during fruit thinning. Every variety is treated with care and the Grenache performs the best in the bottle when we thin out the center cluster. Thinning on any variety is just the removal of fruit and can help with even berry ripening. All of our varieties get some form of fruit thinning, and this is the Grenache’s specialized program. Soon these berries will be a dark garnet red and ready for pressing!
Chardonnay is our flagship white variety! You can see that this cluster larger and the berries are further along in berry ripening. Chardonnay is often the first and last white variety to be harvested. The first pick is for the sparkling wines to capture bright and acidic tasty goodness. The later picks are for still programs that want more fruity goodness that can spend some time in a barrel to bring out toasty, warm, vanilla notes!
Stay tuned for more vineyard updates. Through the rest of the summer these berries will grow and mature with careful management. Harvest will start in late August. Then the real party starts!
